Collecting, maintaining and reporting high quality data is critical to the efficient operation of the Nebraska education enterprise.  The first Nebraska Data Conference, held in April of 2008, was designed for 350 people but over 550 showed up.  The 2009 conference will provide practical information to people on the front line of data collection and reporting data as well as providing valuable networking opportunities.  Conference sessions will help school district and systems understand how state and federal laws impact data collection, understand the state data quality initiatives and get ready for future changes in state data systems.

The conference is sponsored by The Nebraska Data Partnership, a group of organizations that want to improve the quality and availability of education data in Nebraska.  Partners include:  The Nebraska Department of Education, The Nebraska Council of School Administrators, The Nebraska Association of School Boards, The Nebraska State Education Association, The Educational Service units Leaders Council.

This conference is supported by a State Longitudinal Data System grant that was awarded to the Nebraska Department of Education in 2007.  In addition to the data conference, the grant is supporting several other projects that will help improve the quality of data and enhance our statewide data systems.  These projects include:

  • Integration of the Special Education Student Information System into the Nebraska Student and Staff Record System,
  • Updating the system for reporting curriculum information utilizing the new School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED),
  • Adopting a common student record to streamline the exchange of information between school districts
  • Building an new reporting structure that will enhance the access to education by  policy makers and the public,
  • Development of the Nebraska Electronic Transcript Initiative which will facilitate the electronic movement of transcript data between high schools and colleges
  • Supplementing the support of local staff through the addition of four new data system trainers.
